Your personal brand encompasses everything that you want people to know about you. Think of it as a resume. On your resume, you would want to list all skills that will make you stand out from the rest of the people applying to the same position as you. The good thing about your personal brand, contrary to a resume, is that you are not just limited to a piece of paper. We live in a world that is dominated by technology and revolves around the Internet. Therefore, you can use that to your advantage! Nowadays you can find information on virtually any topic on the internet and you are no exception. What is out there for people to see is what creates your personal brand. In other words, your personal brand is the perception others have of you. You have the choice of letting people see whatever is out there for them to see, or the choice of putting in the work to make people see what you want them to see!
Why is Personal Branding Important?
A relationship with potential customers or employers is very important. Taking the time to build up your personal brand is what you are going to use to accomplish several different things. It seems like today there are infinite options for any product, service, etc. Why do some businesses have more demand than others? A big part of it is because of the personal brand they have built. A successful business manages to stand out from the rest of its competitors. If you have a skill or something that makes you distinct from your competitors, you need to use that to your advantage.
Find a way to include that in your personal brand so that when people think about you or your company, they automatically think of that particular skillset or service that distinguishes you from everybody else. Additionally, this also establishes a reputation. When seeking for services or products, most consumers tend to lean more towards a company or person they have heard of before. Imagine you are looking for a landscaper to do some work for your home. Before hiring anyone you will probably ask for references from someone who has recently done similar work in their home. However, if you do not know anyone then you will need to find someone.
This is where the personal branding can help. For example, you may be driving and notice a van with the decal of the company that includes the name, phone number, website, etc. That is like a business card on wheels. That will probably lead you to visit their website, and just like that, the landscaper who had his contact information on his van is ahead of others who did not take the time to create a website or build their personal brand.
The more you have out there, the easier it will be for people to start identifying you and your business. An important thing to keep in mind is that you should try to maintain a theme of some sort. For example, if you are going to have business cards, you should make sure it somewhat resembles your website. This is where things such as color schemes, slogans, and logos come into play. You want things to be uniform across all platforms that you are using for your business. This causes people to start getting an image of you in their heads and their perception of you is what ultimately ends up being your personal brand.
